The gonial angle is the angle at the corner of your jaw. A true gonial angle is measured from the side, so this test gives a front-photo estimate for each side of the jaw, the difference between them and how they compare with typical ranges.
What is the gonial angle?
The gonial angle (also called the mandibular angle) is the angle at the corner of the jaw, between the back edge of the jawbone (the ramus) and its lower edge. A smaller, sharper angle gives a square, defined jaw corner; a larger, more open angle gives a softer, more sloping jawline. It is measured precisely from the side, on X-rays or side-profile photos.
How this test estimates it from a front photo
From the front, the true gonial angle is hidden, so this test measures the angle at each jaw corner as seen in a straight-on photo: between the line down from the cheekbone and the line toward the chin. That front-view angle reads wider than a side-profile gonial angle, so compare results from similar photos rather than with numbers from X-rays. You get the angle for each side, the difference between them and your jaw width compared with your cheekbones.
For a true side measurement, use a 90-degree profile photo with the side profile rating.
Can you change your gonial angle?
The bony angle is set by your skeleton. What changes how sharp it looks: lower body fat, a beard that squares the corner, posture with the head not pushed forward, and, medically, jaw angle implants or fillers placed by a qualified surgeon. The jawline rating scores the overall jaw, including symmetry.
Gonial angle in men and women
Men usually have a smaller, sharper gonial angle and a more prominent jaw corner; women's angles are usually a little larger and softer. Angles also tend to open slightly with age as the jaw remodels and teeth are lost. This test uses separate reference ranges for men and women and shows both sides, because a difference of a few degrees between left and right is common. For the most reliable reading, keep your head level and your mouth closed with teeth lightly together.
Frequently asked questions
What is a normal gonial angle?
Measured from the side on X-rays, adult gonial angles commonly fall in the 120s to low 130s degrees, with men usually sharper than women. This test estimates the angle from a front photo, which reads wider, so use it to compare your own photos and your two sides.
Is a lower gonial angle more attractive?
A sharper angle gives a squarer, more defined jaw, which is often preferred in men. Very low angles can look heavy, and softer angles are typical and attractive in women.
Do you upload or store my photo?
No. Scoring and measurement run entirely in your browser: the face model downloads to your device and your photo never leaves it. Only the AI Analysis tools (such as age or color analysis) send a photo to our server, and they say so before you upload.
